The sandwiches in University Park are Dallas icons. Snider Plaza, the strip mall hugged-up close to SMU’s university campus, has some of the best in the park cities: Meat made from recipes that are older than America, and new, east-coast inspired subs that’ll blow the eyebrows clean off your face.
Because house-brined corned beef and pizza sandwiches beat your fridge’s soggy, weirdly moist cold cuts any day, these are the sandwiches of Dallas’ University Park district that’ll ruin you forever on making sandwiches at home. Continue reading
What is the best movie theater in Dallas? Hands down, it’s Alamo Drafthouse. Here are seven reasons why:
One: They do not permit talking, texting or cell phone use of any kind during the movie. Do that and you will get one warning before they kick you out of the theater without a refund. If you have ever been stuck in a theater next to someone who won’t be quiet or can’t put down their phone, you will be glad to know it won’t be tolerated at Alamo.
Two: They do not run ads.
Those factors alone would make it the best movie theater in Dallas, but there’s plenty more to appreciate.
Three: Alamo creates a custom pre-show for each film that runs for about 30 minutes before the feature starts. It’s worth coming early to see what their creative team concocted. Each pre-show has content related to the upcoming feature, usually including a series of funny, weird or wacky clips, such as 1970s toy ads for Spider-Man action figures before a showing of the latest Marvel movie.
Four: The seats are spaced so you can see even if someone tall sits in front of you.
Five: They serve surprisingly good food, which you order and eat from your seat. (A long, narrow table runs the length of each row in front of the seats.) The menu includes entrees, snacks, soft drinks, beer, wine and specialty cocktails. The hamburgers are terrific, and so is the all-you-can-eat popcorn, which comes with real butter. The tequila chocolate shakes are also worth a try! Orders are written on slips of paper and put in a clip on the table, where waiters unobtrusively spirit them away and just as unobtrusively return with your food. One note – anytime you want a drink refill you must request it on an order slip, as waiters do not make rounds checking drinks the way they do in restaurants.
Six: You pick your specific seats when you buy tickets. You can also do that online, if you don’t mind paying the extra fees (which run about $2.80 per ticket).
Seven: They have a great rewards program, Alamo Victory. Perks include free movies, free or discounted food, and regular buy-one-get-one-free ticket opportunities, among other advantages. Definitely worth pursuing!
Alamo is considered the best movie theater in Dallas for other offerings as well. These include special Quote-Along screenings where shouting out lines is encouraged, Baby Days, classic movie showings and more.
There are two locations in the Dallas area – one on South Lamar, one in Richardson – with two more opening soon in Las Colinas and Lake Highlands. So the next time you want dinner and a movie, plan on dinner AT the movie at the best movie theater in Dallas: Alamo Drafthouse.
